Argentina 2 2 Morocco Olympic Soccer Tournament Opens With Violent Chaos

Argentina 2-2 Morocco: Olympic soccer tournament opens with violent chaos

Medina snatched a late equaliser

Fans invaded the pitch in protest at the opener

PARIS (Reuters) - Argentinas Cristian Medina scored a last-gasp goal to salvage a 2-2 draw against Morocco on Wednesday in a chaotic opening match of the Olympic soccer tournament marred by crowd trouble.

In a pulsating and ill-tempered affair at the Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium in Saint-Etienne, Rodrigo De Paul gave Argentina a 16th-minute lead but goals from Achraf Dari and Soufiane Rahimi put Morocco in control.

With Morocco up 2-1 a minimum of 15 minutes was added and it was Medina heading home what everyone thought would be the winner in the 93rd minute.

But Morocco fans unhappy with the decision to let the goal stand, stormed the pitch and the match was held up for several minutes, with players heading down the tunnel.

After order was restored, Argentina, the reigning Olympic champions, seemed content to settle for a point as both sides failed to create any more clear-cut chances.
